Ward Boggs

  • January 5, 1920 - September 5, 2008

Ira Ward Boggs, 88, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Friday, September 5, 2008, in the Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood.

He was born January 5, 1920, a son of the late Rev. Anderson and Mistie Howard Boggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, C. Irene Wilson Boggs; one son, Jackie Ward Boggs, one great grandchild; one son-in-law, Mike Rose; six brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Boggs was a retired operator for Kaiser Aluminum and a member of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 5668, Ravenswood. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Spencer. He was a 50 year member of the Linden Lodge No. 83, A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Linden Chapter No. 152, Order of the Eastern Star, Linden. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was a former rural mail carrier. He spent a great deal of time with woodworking, flower gardening and yard work. Both family and friends enjoyed hearing him recite many poems, from memory.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Dolores Boggs of Looneyville; two daughters and son-in-law, Shelva and Frank Twyman of Streetsboro, OH and Karen Rose of Mineral Wells; two sisters and brother-in-law, Naomi Morton of Kansas City, MO and Alice and Rolland Schaller of Looneyville; eight grandchildren, Gary Twyman, Vicki Twyman, Randy and his wife, Kathy Twyman, Wayne and his wife, JoAnn Boggs, Bill and his wife, Stephanie Boggs, Dennis and his wife, Sue Boggs, Deanna and her husband, Jeff Combs, Kevin and his wife, Akiko Rose; 21 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren; one step grandson, Jeff and his wife, Suellen White; five step grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Sherrie Reynolds, Karen Rogers, Linda Roach, Shirley Marks and Penny Young for their care and kindness while taking care of Ward for four years at his home. Also, the family would like to thank the staff at Ravenswood Care Center for their help and compassionate care these past months.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King and the Rev. Robert Holland officiating. Burial, with Masonic Graveside Rites, will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover.

John L. Dye

  • August 20, 1916 - May 18, 2008

John L. Dye, 91, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, in the Roane General Hospital Emergency Department, following a fall at his home.

He was born Wednesday, August 20, 1916, at Stringtown, a son of the late Lothrop Fulton “L.F.” and Lexie A. Kincaid Dye.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Evelyn Stemple Dye, on May 14, 2007; also, his beloved granddaughter, Beth Cassady Karns, two brothers and three sisters.

John worked in several jobs over many years, including serving as the superintendent of the Spencer Sanitary Board for 40 years and as a land surveying engineer for over 40 years. He also sold insurance in Roane County for almost 40 years, the last few years working with a partner, the Hon. Terry Williams, Mayor of Spencer.

Among his greatest sources of fulfillment was the service he gave to his church, teaching Sunday school for almost 60 years and recently being honored as “Deacon Emeritus.” His love of people and his concern for others was well known.

Survivors include one daughter, Marty Cassady of Dallas, Texas; one son, Carson F. Dye of Toledo, Ohio; four grandchildren, Carly Dye Adams of Columbus, Ohio, Emily Dye, Liesl Dye and Blakely Dye all of Toledo; one great grandson, Isaac Karns of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Friends may call at the First Baptist Church of Spencer Tuesday, May 20 from 6-8 p.m. where the funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.

John  Ward Pettit

  • March 23, 2008

John Ward Pettit, 90, of Spencer, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.

He was born in Elkins, a son of the late John R. and Margaret Ward Pettit. He retired from the city of Spencer Waterworks Department and was a member of First Baptist Church of Spencer. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 21.

He is survived by one daughter, Judy Epling of Spencer; one son, Bill of Okeechobee, Fla.; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Criner Pettit; and one brother, Bob.

Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Pastor Smith Epling officiating and Rev. Christopher Brock assisting. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery with military honors by local veterans groups.

Stacle "Bea" Scott

  • March 23, 2008

Stacle “Bea” Smith Scott, 85, of Spencer, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Roane General Hospital.

She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Andy and Maude Butcher Smith. She worked for G.C. Murphy for 47 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Spencer. She worked for Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company, Baltimore, during World War II.
She is survived by one sister, Gail Ullom of Spencer; and one brother, Charles Smith of Spencer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Scott; two sisters, Alice Batten and Ruth Stahlman; and two brothers, Jarrett and Kester “Dick” Smith.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial was in Snodgrass Cemetery, Gandeeville.

Quellen McGuire Keith

  • June 15, 1920 - January 15, 2008

Quellen McGuire Keith, 87, of Columbia, South Carolina, formerly of Spencer, West Virginia, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2008 in the C.M. Tucker Center, Columbia, following an extended illness.

Mr. Keith lived most of his life in Spencer, relocating to Columbia, in 2004.

He was born June 15, 1920, at Spencer, a son of the late Russell T. and Edna McGuire Keith.

Mr. Keith was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration for over 40 years. He was elected to two terms on the Roane County Commission, serving from 1988-2000.

He was a 1938 graduate of Spencer High School, a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and earned an M.S. in Agriculture from West Virginia University.

He was a World War II veteran and served in England in the Army Air Corps. During this time, he played trombone for a military dance band and continued playing for many years with the Top Hatters dance band in Spencer.

Mr. Keith was a member of the Spencer Rotary Club, Moriah Lodge No. 38, A.F. & A.M., the American Legion Post 21, the Roane County Chamber of Commerce and was secretary for many years of W.Va. Hereford Breeders Association. He was also a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Quellen was an Eagle Scout and one of the few scouts to meet the founder of the Boy Scouts of America, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, while attending a World Jamboree in England.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Johnnie Mae Keith of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Jon Girard and Crissa Keith, Thomas Christopher and Doris Keith all of Columbia; four grandchildren, Sarah Barrett Keith of Washington, DC, Anna Christine Keith of Charleston, SC, Adam Christopher Keith and Matthew Thomas Keith both of Columbia; brothers, Dr. John E. Keith of Spartanburg, SC and Russell T. Keith, Jr. of Charleston, WV.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial with military graveside rites, accorded by several Roane County veteran groups, will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.

Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, Friday from 6-8 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Justine Spencer Harris

Justine Spencer Harris, 87, of Spencer, died Thursday, December 6, 2007, at home.

She was born November 3, 1920, at White Oak, Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Elber and Icy Bell Jarvis Spencer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Corliss Willard Harris, Sr.; one son, Corliss Willard Harris, Jr.; one sister, Joy Metz DeWeese.

Justine was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed sewing and flower gardening. She was a 50 year member and Past Matron of the Linden Chapter No. 152, O.E.S., Linden and a member of the Roane General Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Clover Community Church, Clover and attended the First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Survivors include two sons, Stanton Aquilla Harris and Wayne Cecil Harris both of Spencer; three sisters, Dorlene Walker of Ravenswood, Dormal Rhodes and Wanda Nutter both of Spencer; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King and the Rev. Randall L. “Randy” Whited officiating. Burial will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

Mary E. Nugen

  • June 19, 1917 - August 6, 2007

Mary E. Nugen, 90, of Spencer, West Virginia, formerly of Summersville, went home to be with her Lord, Monday, August 6, 2007.

She was born June 19, 1917, in Nicholas County, the daughter of the late Marshall and Mertie Bell Tyree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orval W. Nugen; a brother, Paul Tyree; and a sister, Ezelle Hypes.

Mrs. Nugen was a homemaker and mother. She was the bookkeeper at Citizens Chevrolet, Clay. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer. Prior to moving to Spencer, she had been an active member and Sunday school teacher at the Summersville Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Clay.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Curt Sayre of Dayton, TN, Mary Ann and Woody Wilson of Spencer; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Nugent of Mineral Wells; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A funeral service and celebration of her life will be Thursday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King and the Rev. Dr. Curtis Sayre officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Summersville.

Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the service.

Virginia Katheryn Davis Hathaway

Virginia Katheryn Davis Hathaway, 82, of Spencer, died June 15, 2007, at Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after a short illness.

She was born February 19, 1925, in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Jesse and Lula Smith Davis. She was a homemaker and a seamstress with Spencer Manufacturing Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer. A former resident of Speed, she was also a member of the Speed United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary, and her husband, Lawrence Newlon, of Greensburg, Pa.; one son, Jerry Hathaway and his wife, Linda, of Williamstown; one sister, Violet (Davis) Harbert of Ontario, Canada; granddaughters, Terri (Hathaway) and her husband, Kevin Welch, of Vincent, Ohio, Laura (Newlon) and her husband, the Rev. Phillip Elliott of Smithfield, Pa., and Amy (Newlon) and her husband, Matthew Bundy, of Vienna, Va.; grandson, Barry Hathaway and his wife, Maxie, of Suffolk, Va.; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Aaron Elliott of Smithfield, Pa., Kial, Chase and Collin Welch of Vincent, Ohio, and Gavin and Brooke Bundy of Vienna, Va.; and special friend and caregiver, Donna Lucas of Spencer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Edward Gale Hathaway; and brothers, Harold and Earl Davis.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betty L. Foster Atkinson

  • June 12, 1930 - June 10, 2007

Betty L. Foster Atkinson, 76, of Spencer, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, in Cedar Grove Personal Care Facilities, Parkersburg.

She was born June 12, 1930, in Spencer, a daughter of the late Jarrett A. and Carrie A. Smith Foster. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, June Y. Mount.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Christian Education and a member of the Prayer Ministries.

She was a 4-H leader for 35 years. Also, she was a member of the Roane County 4-H Foundation and the 4-H All-Stars.

Betty was co-founder and co-coordinator of Roane County CAP. She was a former president of the Roane County Republican Women. She was a member of the Roane General Hospital Auxiliary, the Board of Directors of Building Blocks Child Development and the Roane County Retired School Personnel.

She retired in 1994 from the Roane County Board of Education as a counselor serving the Spencer Middle School. Betty served as president and treasurer of the W.Va. Professional Educator’s Association, Inc. She was a member of the American Association of Counselors; former treasurer and membership chairperson of the W.Va. Counselor’s Association.

Betty was a 1947 graduate of Spencer High School. She earned her B.A. at Marshall University and her Master’s in counseling at WVCOGS.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Beth and Richard Page of Pinehurst, NC – Carrie Ann and Bill Brezinski of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald D. and Cathy Atkinson of Vass, NC – Randall L. and Cara Atkinson of Parkersburg; one sister, Nancy R. Bennett of Eleanor; seven grandchildren, Nathan Stonestreet , Anna Stonestreet Smith, Jacob, Carrie Beth and Will Brezinski, Jarrett and Gabriel Atkinson; one great granddaughter, Lauren Stonestreet.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.

Friends may call Monday, from 6-8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Spencer and one hour prior to the service Tuesday.

Evelyn S. Dye, 90, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Monday, May 14, 2007, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer.

She was born January 2, 1917, at Philippi, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Carson and Ellen Bennett Stemple. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Stemple; and one granddaughter, Beth Cassady.

Mrs. Dye was a retired Spencer Grade School teacher and a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Survivors include her husband, John Dye, whom she married February 14, 1937; one daughter, Marty Cassady of Dallas, TX; one son, Carson Dye of Toledo, OH; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.

Maurice Edward "Eddie" Webb

Maurice Edward “Eddie” Webb, 82, of Huntington, died December 16, 2006, in the V.A. Medical Center, Huntington.

Eddie was a son of the late William Wallace Webb and the late Lilyan Kirk Webb Fugett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step father, John Fugett; sister, Eloise Arthur; brothers, William Webb, Jr. and Richard Webb.

He was a retired employee of the V.A. Medical Center, Huntington. He was a graduate of Huntington East High School and a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer. Also, he was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie J. Webb; daughters and son-in-law, Ellen West of Pontiac, MI, Linda and Paul Glover of Ona, Robin Davis of Huntington; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Sandy Webb of Philadelphia, PA; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Joe Moore of Dunbar, Carol and Chuck Polan of Huntington; step son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jayne Bennett of Spencer; sister, Edith Hatten of Huntington; 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, with the Rev. Leon B. Strickland officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover. Friends may call at the church one hour before the funeral.

Charles William "Bill" Kincaid

Charles William “Bill” Kincaid, 81, of Spencer, West Virginia, died Sunday, December 3, 2006.

He was born April 14, 1925, a son of the late Ott G. and Maude E. Kincaid. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and James Kincaid.

Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, an Army veteran of World War II and was in the wholesale and retail grocery business.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara R. Bennett Kincaid; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Garlan Miller of Spencer, Jane and Stan Heasley of Morgantown, Janet and Jay Starcher of Spencer; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Daneen Kincaid of Clarkston, MI; grandchildren, Mike and Steven Starcher, Elliott and Miller, Sarah and Jessica Heasley, Stephanie, Tiffany and Jordan Kincaid; great grandsons, Dylan, Daniel and Alex Starcher.

There will be a gathering of family and friends Saturday, December 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, 338 Main St. and Parking Plaza, Spencer. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Richard H. "Dick" Turner

  • August 19, 1932 - November 7, 2006

Richard H. “Dick” Turner, 74, of Gandeeville, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at 11:25 p.m. in the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after an extended illness.

He was born August 19, 1932 in Ogdensburg, NY, a son of Jean Porter Turner of Ogdensburg, NY and the late Robert W. Turner. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Sally Turner and Peggy Turner; two brothers, David Turner and Art Turner.

“Dick” was a retired pipefitter and a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local 73, Oswego, NY. He was a member of the NRA and the Waddington Lodge No. 0393, F. & A.M., Waddington, NY. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, WV.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Joan Jennie-Belle White Turner of Spencer; two daughters, Dawn McCune of Spencer and Charlene Reed of Walton; one son, Daniel Turner of Gandeeville; two brothers, George Turner of Canton, NY and Lawrence Turner of St. Lawrence County, NY; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the First Baptist Church of Spencer after 6:00 p.m. Friday. There will be no funeral service.

Mozelle Hickman

  • August 15, 1920 - February 1, 2008

Mozelle Hickman, 87, of Gay, West Virginia, died Friday, February 1, 2008, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after an extended illness.

She was born Sunday, August 15, 1920, in Kanawha County, the daughter of the late Mickey and Beatrice Hudson Halstead, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville H. Hickman.  Mozelle was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer and a former member of the Spring Fork Missionary Baptist Church, Charleston.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Sybil Hickman of Gay, Sherry and John Lake also of Gay; grandsons, Darien Hickman of Pear Land, TX, Jared “Clay” Lake of Clarksville, TN and Christian “Chris” Lake of Lee’s Summit, MO; four great grandsons, one great granddaughter and two sisters.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Gay.
